this morning, ears still ringing with nick cave
a show i never wouldve gone to
unmarried, of my own accord we stood in front
of the new orangutan exhibit, watched karen
dig through shallow palm tree roots to dark
pure soil with fingers then a stick, fashioning
her own shovel. we looked at each other alarmed while
strangers around us cooed isnt she cute never stopping
to consider that use of tools, opposable thumbs
these things used to separate us, didnt they?

we imagined a jungle scene, a midnight rendezvous:
main operatives, karen, clyde, josephine: objective -
get captured by the world famous san diego zoo.
when sufficient information has been obtained
escape via tunnel. karen: dig. josephine and clyde: roll around
to divert attention while the tunnel is completed.

strollers went by in flocks, parents let toddlers
shriek MONKEYS! uncorrected.
