we're always hesitant at first; we warm up to the conversations that are not like they were when we were nineteen and twenty one, not like twenty two and twenty five. we are twenties five-and-seven: fifty two. our tones have changed except in those foyers of our friendship where we take off our galoshes and shake out umbrellas to adjust to the familiarity of the other's voice.
