i remember in photographs that were never
taken - poses struck and stuck in my
memory for no good reason at all: a
reach across me to switch on the left turn signal,
a set of eyes spying from the stairwell,
a silent, welcoming meow from behind a window,
a wink from a newly bar-mitzvahed boy perched
atop a chair, a hand outstretched to rescue
me from wayward oversized rollerskates,
a million nervous plane debarkments and
long, striped legs, tattered shoes, perfect glasses,
outstretched arms running up an empty street to greet me.
