waking up babyless this morning left me feeling
vaguely empty-armed and disappointed,
mulling over names and exasperated at my own
inability to control biology with reason.
i mightve named her frances, and she'd surely
have long eyelashes, her daddy's dark brown
eyes and her mum's manic depression to discover
later, to make her more interesting to boys at nineteen.
nearsighted in more ways than one, shortfingered (never
to be a pianist like her uncle asa) chestnut
haired and solemn, a future something wonderful.
