my mom and i sat across from each other at
hot mama's, eating my favorite pizza and she
told me all about the sink holes, the eucalyptus trees
falling on the 163 and smashing cars, women, and the boulder
that dislodged itself to roll down a steep
embankment and crash into a teenaged girl's bedroom
to kill her while she did homework at her computer.
she told these stories with relish, in great detail
like her sadness encompassed san diego county
in its entirety and turned it into a veritable disaster area.
